Dowries- who needs them? Why do some countries still allow them? Basically a dowry is an amount of money (or something of value) someone pays their potential in-laws in order to marry their intended. Of course, dowries originated centuries ago, when marriages were for the most part arranged by the families of the bride and groom. In India, the bride’s family pays a dowry. It practically has died out throughout the West. This week, gun control measures appear to be on the march. Connecticut just passed a series of strict gun laws, as did Colorado. In addition, Obama is in Denver to promote gun control. But while Obama is calling for stricter gun legislation, he appears to be oblivious to the threat posed by North Korea. This year, the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee decided not to include the University of Kentucky in the Big Dance, based on the Wildcats’ record and early exit in the SEC Tournament. Naturally, such a decision did not sit well with UK fans, especially since Kentucky was the defending national champions. But it came to who should have been selected, Kentucky is just the tip of the iceberg. Twelve teams with less than ten losses were not selected for the NCAA Tournament.
